Most Glaze Your Own Pottery appointments are approximately 1 hour.

This gives you time to choose your pottery, learn how the glazes work, select your colors, and decorate your piece.

Some designs may take a little longer—and that's okay! Glazing is meant to be a relaxing, creative experience, not a race. If you already know you'd like to create something especially detailed, feel free to plan a little extra time.

For large groups, please plan for approximately 2 hours. Groups can accommodate up to 16 seated glazing guests.

No experience necessary! We'll walk you through everything you need to know before you begin.

When you arrive, you'll:

1. Choose your pottery from the available pieces.

2. Learn about your glaze options and how different colors and application techniques work.

3. Choose your colors and supplies.

4. Design and glaze your piece however you'd like.

5. Leave your pottery with us for its final steps and kiln firing.

Staff will be available throughout your appointment to answer questions, help with techniques, or offer ideas if you're not quite sure where to start.

Once you're finished, your pottery stays at The Glaze Garden to be glazed as needed and fired in the kiln.

Finished pottery is generally ready for pickup within 7–10 business days.

The Glaze Garden offers a rotating selection of handmade pottery ready for you to glaze.

Depending on what's currently available, you may find mugs, bowls, plates, planters, vases, berry bowls, platters, seasonal pieces, and more.

Because the pottery is handmade in small batches, shelf inventory is always changing and available pieces are first come, first served.

Want Something Specific?

If you have your heart set on a particular form—or you're planning ahead for a special project—you can request that a piece be handmade for you in advance.

Please allow at least 2 weeks of advance notice for requested pottery. Each piece still needs to be made, trimmed, dried, and bisque fired before it's ready for you to glaze.

You'll see both earthenware and stoneware options at The Glaze Garden. Both are real ceramic pottery, but they're made from different clay bodies, use different glazes, and are fired differently.

Earthenware

Earthenware is perfect if you love bright colors, detailed painting, patterns, lettering, or illustrative designs.

You'll use colorful underglazes to paint your piece. Once you're finished, I'll apply a clear glaze and fire it for you.

Choose earthenware if you want:

• Bright, predictable colors

• Detailed painting or illustrations

• Lettering, patterns, or lots of different colors

• A more traditional pottery-painting experience

Stoneware

Stoneware is fired at a much higher temperature and is the same type of pottery I use for much of my own functional work.

Instead of painting primarily with bright underglazes, you'll choose from high-fire glazes that can flow, layer, break over texture, and interact with one another in the kiln.

The final result can be beautifully organic and sometimes a little unpredictable—that's part of the fun!

Choose stoneware if you want:

• Rich, layered glaze combinations

• More organic or earthy finishes

• Glaze movement and variation

• A piece with the look and feel of traditional handmade studio pottery

Glaze Your Own Pottery is priced by the piece, so there is no separate studio or glazing fee unless otherwise noted.

Prices vary depending on the size and form of the pottery you choose. Most pieces fall between $30–$75.

Your pottery, use of studio glazes and supplies, instruction, and kiln firing are included in the marked price.

Absolutely! Anyone old enough to hold a brush is welcome to glaze.

Children should remain supervised by an accompanying adult while visiting the studio. The Glaze Garden is a working pottery studio, so you'll find pottery, tools, glaze materials, and equipment throughout the space.

Adults are welcome to help younger artists with their projects—you don't need to purchase a separate piece just to accompany your child.

Due to the materials used in ceramic glazes, eating in the working studio area is not recommended.

Drinks are welcome!

If you're planning a celebration or larger group event and would like to bring cake, snacks, or other food, please contact me ahead of time so we can make arrangements for a designated food area.

Your finished pottery is generally ready for pickup within 7–10 business days.

After your appointment, your piece still has some work ahead of it! Depending on the pottery and glaze type, I may need to apply clear glaze before carefully loading everything into the kiln for its final firing.

Kilns—and pottery—occasionally have minds of their own, so pickup times are estimates rather than guarantees. I'll let you know when your pottery is finished and ready to head home.

Please wait until you've received your ready-for-pickup notification before returning for your piece.

Recommended for adults and ages 9+.

This is a structured, beginner-friendly pottery lesson where we'll work together to learn the basic steps of throwing pottery on the wheel.

You'll learn how to center the clay, open your form, pull the walls, and begin shaping it into a vessel. I'll guide you through the process and help as needed—no previous pottery experience is required!

The goal of this lesson is to begin learning the actual process of wheel throwing while giving you the opportunity to create pottery of your own.

Choose a Wheel Throwing Lesson if you:

• Are an adult or age 9+

• Want to learn the fundamentals of throwing pottery

• Enjoy learning a new skill

• Want more structured instruction

• Are interested in creating a finished piece on the wheel

Recommended for children under age 9.

Pottery wheels require quite a bit of coordination, strength, patience, and fine motor control. For younger artists, trying to follow a traditional wheel-throwing lesson can sometimes become more frustrating than fun.

Guided Wheel Play is designed differently.

Instead of focusing on creating a perfect finished piece, we'll focus on exploring the pottery wheel, getting our hands muddy, and having fun with clay.

I'll help your child experience how the clay moves, practice some of the basic motions of wheel throwing, and experiment with shaping clay on the wheel in a relaxed and age-appropriate way.

Choose Guided Wheel Play if your child:

• Is under age 9

• Is curious about trying the pottery wheel

• Would enjoy a playful, hands-on clay experience

• Isn't quite ready for the structure of a full throwing lesson

• Would have more fun experimenting than worrying about making a particular piece

Because this experience is focused on exploration and play, a finished piece is not guaranteed.
